Rearranging: A Lost Art of Home Décor Every time I find myself in a craft store poring over the new selections, I begin again to think that if only I had this item or that decorative craft, then my house would look perfect. Unfortunately, this is not great for my wallet or my house! The sad truth of the matter is that when I finally do succumb, my new treasure of a purchase all too often appears as clutter and ends up at my next yard sale. Instead of the constant looking and searching for new items, I have found that rearranging what I already have is a great solution for home décor. Some simple rearranging of my furniture, pictures, and knickknacks spruces up my life at home and gives me that fresh home decor feel. This way, I am expanding my artistic ability and sparing my wallet! Avoiding Clutter as You Decorate Though there are lots of ways to decorate a home, the “cluttered” look doesn’t quite work anywhere. It can be easy to get carried away, but often the result is opposite of what is intended. Have you ever been in a room that is so overstuffed with décor that it is awkward to move around? You may have had the experience of walking into someone’s garage and seeing that it is so full of decorative materials that there is not enough room for anything else (like an automobile). Though form is important, remember that function comes first. Think about the kitchen: most people use all the counter space they have, so to fill that area with knickknacks is usually a bad idea. On the other hand, bedrooms should be relaxing, sanctuary-type places where beautiful and calming decorative pieces will work perfectly. A good rule of thumb is if you need to move a decorative piece out of the way more than twice a week, it probably should be thrown out or exchanged for a more functional item. Learning What You Love in Interior Decorating Interior decorating seems to have a universal appeal. If you have been affected with the interior design bug, we have a couple suggestions to get to know your favorite styles a little better. A good beginner’s step to learning the art of interior design is to find out more about the subject. There are books, magazines, books on tape, forums, and blogs on this topic, just to name a few sources of information. There are many ideas that you can implement with just a little bit of knowledge or training. Magazines like Better Homes & Gardens or Home and Design, or catalogs for furniture and home decoration stores, are great places to turn to for ideas on the overall “look” you may use. You will quickly learn what styles you love and which ones you think look awful. Armed with this background information, you are ready to pick a project and begin. Remember, it is more important that you have the experience than a perfect product on the first try. After all, experience will teach you more than all the research you can do. Creating Flower Designs for Weddings Weddings are one of the most beautiful and exciting events in anyone’s lifetime. Every wedding can do with some flower decorations to heighten the attractiveness of the ceremony and/or celebrations. Flowers are often used to designate the bride and groom’s family and cherished friends. The bridesmaids and women of the family have corsages; the best man, father of the bride, and groom usually have boutonnieres; most important of all is the bride’s bouquet. There are flowers decorating the wedding site and the reception area. With such a great responsibility as coordinating the wedding flower decorations, you will need to break the process up into manageable stages. As you decide what the overall style of the wedding will be, think about the color, then the types of flowers to be used, followed by possible designs for arrangements. The color is usually a very simple decision as the bride will already be choosing the color or colors for the wedding. When it comes to choosing which types of flowers will be used, the bride may have some strong preferences there. Roses are a very traditional choice. The most difficult decision is often with how the flowers are arranged, because there are so many choices. The best way is often to stick to two or three “looks” and apply them to all the decorations you use. If you follow these steps, you will do a great job regardless of how practiced you are!
