Haven’t Seen Avenue Q Yet? Get To the Theatre After 6 years on Broadway, the delightful Avenue Q has moved to a new home Off-Broadway at New World Stages. Using puppets to tell the story, Avenue Q is highly evocative of Sesame Street, but is a show with adult themes. The show has memorable and catchy songs, is side-splittingly funny at times, and will make you cry at others. Although Avenue Q does use puppetry, it is not for children. Most children under 12 will not be ready for the themes of Avenue Q, and very small children (under 4) are not allowed in the theatre. The plot centers around Princeton, a recent college graduate, who has just moved to Avenue Q as it is the only place within his budget. The audience is then gradually introduced to his neighbors and goes along for the ride as the characters struggle to find jobs, dates and continue to search for their purpose in life. Avenue Q is well worth seeing next time you visit New York and has multiple Tony awards to its credit. Don’t Forget Off Broadway For Your New York Theater Experience When planning a show-going trip to New York consider going beyond Broadway for your live theater experience. There are a host of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters that house some of New York's finest up and coming musical and straight theater. Once upon a time Off-Broadway referred to the location of a theater as being outside the main theater district of Broadway. These days the distinction has changed. An Off-Broadway theater is a New York City theater that seats 99-500, an Off-Off-Broadway venue seats under 99. Creative artists often start their careers Off-Broadway, due in large part to the lower cost of producing a show in a smaller venue. Off-Broadway has been the starting point for many shows that went on to be hugely successful on the main stages of Broadway. Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair, Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line and Doubt are a few shows that had their start Off-Broadway. If you are on a budget, Off-Broadway theaters are a great place to see more affordable shows, ticket prices can be kept down because of the usually lower production costs. If the Off-Broadway world is a complete mystery, check out New York's Time Out website for comprehensive information on what is currently playing, theater reviews and more. Broadway and 21 Club. The Perfect Dinner and a Show Combination in New York. For a fast moving city like New York, the city’s residents still care deeply at preserving their hometown’s history. And for that, every visitor to New York should tip their hat. The drive to preserve and celebrate New York City’s history is nowhere more present than at the famous (and infamous) ‘21’ Club. At 80 years old this year, 21, as it is most commonly known, is within walking distance of Broadway’s famous theatres. Back at the start of prohibition in 1920, two young cousins, Jack Kriendler and Charlie Berns, tried their hand at the profitable but illegal speakeasy business. After a couple of early successes, the two men renovated a former brownstone at 21 W 52nd Street. Ever since 21 exploded onto the New York City dining scene early on New Year’s Eve, 1929, it has been a part of what makes New York unique. If you have only one dinner slot on your next New York or Broadway vacation make sure you pencil in 21. You will be rubbing shoulders with New York’s finest. Every President (excepting George W. Bush) has dined here. JFK dined here on the night of his inauguration. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart had their first date at 21; or so the story goes. And back in 1931, Ernest Hemmingway was caught with gangster Legs Diamond’s girlfriend doing some “baking” in the 21 kitchen. With its fantastic and spectacular history, 21 is a perfect accompaniment to a night on Broadway. The Best Plan For A Week Of Live Theater In New York You are taking your seven day dream vacation seeing live theater on Broadway soon. Don't let it become a nightmare trip of overspending and exhaustion. First step, keep the planning to a minimum. Have your hotel booked and meals budgeted for in advance but don't schedule and buy tickets for every show you think you want to see. When you are out and about in New York, new ideas for shows to see will be everywhere, and you will be relieved you left gaps in your itinerary to account for these unexpected tangents. Also, what you may not know is that New York is the best place to buy your tickets. With 40 Broadway theaters running shows almost all the time, there are unsold tickets available to be purchased every night at most theaters. But you don't need to waste energy walking from theater to theater in search of a seat, just walk to TKTS in Duffy Square (at the corner of 47th Street and Broadway). Go to the TKTS booth, admire its award winning architecture, and get your day-of-performance tickets for up to 50% off regular price for all the Broadway shows. Tickets come up for sale all day long at TKTS, which means you don't have to rush out of bed, but can sleep in and pick out a show in the late afternoon if you so desire. If you want an evening away from the theater, consider seeing a matinee that day. You can see matinees at 2pm on Wednesday or Saturday or at 3pm on Sunday, and still make it to one of New York's award winning restaurants in the evening. And finally, try to plan your trip so that you land in New York on a Monday when the theaters are closed, that way you can have a real day off before the entertainment begins.
