Broadway Musical Theatre. A 250 Year New York City Tradition.

We know Broadway as the home of the most fantastic and extravagant musical theatre in the world. It is astonishing to realize that live theatre has been a part of New York’s cultural identity for 250 years. The first recorded theatre to have been built in New York went up in 1750. The New York theatre experience has evolved considerably since its early beginnings. In the beginning, a popular choice was a Shakespearian play, by the mid 19th century minstrel shows had a following. The 19th century New York stage experimented with a variety of entertainment forms; vaudeville, musical entertainment, operas and melodrama to name a few. In the late 19th century, imported European burlesque took the city by storm. We can thank the performers of the 19th century for the beginnings of musical theatre; however the modern musical wasn’t born until the staging of Show Boat in 1927. The theatre district started life in downtown Manhattan, and over the course of a century moved gradually toward mid-town. The current Broadway Theatre district has been in place since the 1920’s and 1930’s. Thanks to the long, experimental and colorful history of theatre in New York, we have the richness and sophistication of the modern musical available to be seen anytime you can make it to Broadway.
