Don’t Forget Off Broadway For Your New York Theater Experience

While in New York, don't overlook Off-Broadway shows if you are searching for quality live theater. There are a host of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters that house some of New York's finest up and coming musical and straight theater. Once upon a time Off-Broadway referred to the location of a theater as being outside the main theater district of Broadway. But the meaning of the term has changed. Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway relate to a theaters size; the former are venues seating 99-500, the later seat up to 99 people. Off-Broadway has been a great place to start a career in the theater for many people, because of the lower cost to produce shows. Many of the best shows on Broadway owe their success to their early days Off-Broadway. To name just a few; Avenue Q, Little Shop of Horrors, Rent, Doubt, A Chorus Line and Spring Awakening all started Off-Broadway. If you are on a budget, Off-Broadway theaters are a great place to see more affordable shows, ticket prices can be kept down because of the usually lower production costs. If the Off-Broadway world is a complete mystery, check out New York's Time Out website for comprehensive information on what is currently playing, theater reviews and more.

The Actors on Broadway Are Stars You’ve Never Heard Of.

We all know Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but how about Boyd Gaines and Elaine Stritch? The less well-known names are highly regarded actors, but have probably never been featured in a gossip magazine. The reason for this; they are live theatre stars of Broadway. Most of the stars of Broadway aren’t as well known as their Hollywood colleagues. Theatres have been known to boost audience numbers by casting a Hollywood star in a lead role, but most often the lead actors and actresses on Broadway aren’t superstars. However, they are just as talented as their friends in Hollywood. No matter what happens on stage, a Broadway actor must deal with it and carry on; if their shoe breaks, a co-star forgets a line, or even forgets to come on stage at the right time they have to keep going. The show must go on!There’s no one to double for you if you have an area of weakness. A performer must be a supremely talented actor, singer and dancer to make it here. They must have a funny bone and the ability to make people weep. Make sure to include a show featuring the legends of Broadway on your next New York vacation. Bernadette Peters, Elaine Stritch, Joel Grey, Julie Harris and Boyd Gaines are some of the names to look for.

21 Club. A Dramatic Place To Eat Before a Broadway Show.

Even though life moves fast in New York, the people who live here respect their history. We owe the city of New York a big thank you for that. The ‘21’ club in Manhattan is a great example of a place that people have strived to preserve and celebrate. 21, as it is affectionately called, is a close jaunt to the Broadway theatre district and celebrates its 80th birthday this year. When prohibition started in 1920, cousins Jack Kriendler and Charlie Berns decided to get into the booming speakeasy business. After a few years in different locations, the cousins settled on a former brownstone at 21 W 52nd Street. In the early hours of December 31st 1929, the club roared to life and has since woven itself into the fabric of New York City. If you only have a small budget for dining in New York, you must eat at 21; even if you have to go hungry the rest of the time. You will be rubbing shoulders with New York’s finest. All but one of the US Presidents have eaten at 21. After his inauguration, JFK ate at 21. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart had their first date at 21; or so the story goes. Ernest Hemmingway and gangster Legs Diamond’s girlfriend were caught “cooking” in the kitchen back in 1931. 21 is a perfect accompaniment to a Broadway theatre trip with its dramatic and long history.

The Broadway Shows You Don’t Want To Miss

With so many amazing shows currently playing on Broadway, deciding what to see can be daunting. On a theater jaunt to New York, the majority of people have a set budget and limited time, so wise choices need to be made. For a guaranteed night to remember, catch Wicked at the Gershwin Theater. Based on Gregory Maguire's well-regarded novel about the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked has been universally well-received for its story and music since opening in 2003. Another musical worth budgeting for is Billy Elliott, on stage at the Imperial Theater. The show tells an uplifting tale about a boy with a talent for ballet, but much standing in his way to reach his dreams. For straight drama, go along to see After Miss Julie starring Sienna Miller at the American Airlines Theater. Patrick Marber bases his play on Miss Julie, a play by August Strindberg, taking audiences to the English countryside for a tale of sex and power. For something with a lighter tone, and an authentic New York appeal, Neil Simon can't be beat. Simon's very funny comedy Brighton Beach Memoirs plays at the Nederlander Theater.
