Find New And Exciting Theater, Go Off-Broadway

If you want something a little different on your next New York trip, venture Off-Broadway for your dose of theater. There are a host of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters that house some of New York's finest up and coming musical and straight theater. Once upon a time Off-Broadway referred to the location of a theater as being outside the main theater district of Broadway. These days the distinction has changed. An Off-Broadway theater is a New York City theater that seats 99-500, an Off-Off-Broadway venue seats under 99. Creative artists often start their careers Off-Broadway, due in large part to the lower cost of producing a show in a smaller venue. And as a result perhaps, Off-Broadway has been the original home for a number of wildly popular Broadway shows. Rent, Little Shop of Horrors, Hair, Avenue Q, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line and Doubt are a few shows that had their start Off-Broadway. The lower cost of producing a show Off-Broadway is a great benefit to theater-goers, as it almost always relates to lower ticket prices. If you need help getting started on what shows to see, go online and read as many reviews as you can, many of which will found in New York's Time Out which can be found online.

Broadway Salutes Its Actors In Naming Its Theatres.

There are 40 official Broadway theatres and quite a few of them are named after the professionals who made Broadway what it is today. The names of the brightest stars from Broadway’s history are honored on five of these theatres. Four actresses and two actors have their name perpetually in lights on Broadway. The Booth Theatre at 222 W 45th St pays homage to the famed 19th century actor Edwin Booth. This is Booth’s second named theatre; the first was opened by Booth himself in 1869. Ethel Barrymore has her namesake in the Barrymore Theatre on 47th Street. She starred in many plays here, including the opening show in 1928. Vivian Beaumont Allen has her name on the theatre at the Lincoln Center. Vivian Beaumont Allen was an actress who donated significantly to the theatre building fund, but died before the theatre opened in 1965. The Helen Hayes Theatre was originally called the Little Theatre, but was renamed in her honor in 1983. Considered by many the First Lady of American Theatre, Helen Hayes was an accomplished actress. Her original namesake theatre was demolished and that was what prompted the name change for the Little Theatre. The formidable married legends of Broadway; Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne are the last on this list, and have a theatre named for them on W 46th Street.

See A Show At These Off-Broadway Theatres On Your Next Trip to New York City

Don't forget to see a show outside of Broadway on your next trip to New York. Off-Broadway theatres have some of the finest, most challenging works on their stages. Here are a couple of the well-respected and attended theatres that seat 99-500 people. In the East Village area of Manhattan, visit the New York Theatre Workshop for outstanding theatre. Before heading to Broadway, Rent had its original production here in 1994. Many established directors and writers have worked at the New York Theatre Workshop since its first opening night in 1982. Caryl Churchill, Alan Ball and Tony Kushner are a few whose works have been developed here. Opening night for the NYWT's next production is November 13th 2009, when they will be stage The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Also look at visiting the Public Theatre, in its 42nd year, as it is another fantastic example of Off-Broadway theatre. This theatre, located in the East Village section of Manhattan at 425 Lafayette, started its story with the successful world-premiere of Hair, then some years later A Chorus Line also debuted there. That first production of A Chorus Line created so much buzz that it sold out before it had even opened. Over the course of its history hundreds of awards have been bestowed on shows at the Public Theatre. Today the Public theatre includes five separate spaces for theatre and a cabaret pub venue. For what is currently playing check The Public Theatre's website.

How to Choose What Shows to See on Broadway.

Make sure you add a couple of Broadway shows to your next New York City vacation itinerary. Even if you have never been to the theatre, it is easy to find excellent shows to see. An easy way to find shows is to look at what plays and actors were the recipients of this year’s Tony awards. Hollywood gives Oscars to its movies, and Broadway gives Tonys to its shows. The panel of judges consists of approximately 700 theatre and media professionals, which means subjectivity is ruled out entirely. Many of the shows that were awarded this past June are still playing on Broadway. Included were the musicals Billy Elliott which won 10 Tonys and Next to Normal which won three Tonys and the straight play winner was God of Carnage with three awards. There were many other winners, see the full list at www. tonywards. com.
