Broadway Plus Kids Equals A Fun Family Vacation If you really want a fabulous family vacation in New York, take your kids to see a Broadway show or two. With so much theater available in one city, it is not surprising that young children have plenty of options for entertainment as well as adults. Right now there are myriad options for parents traveling with their children who want to take in a show. At the Imperial Theater is Billy Elliott, the inspiring dance musical about a young boy's dream to become a ballet dancer. Beloved nanny Mary Poppins, along with her charges, Jane and Michael Banks, are currently flying their kites at the New Amsterdam Theater. While over at Broadway Theater, kids will enjoy their favorite ogre, Shrek in his very own musical. All of these Broadway shows have matinee times on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, making these an ideal choice for kids who need to be in bed at a reasonable hour. Off-Broadway there is even more variety available in children's theater. A good choice that is suitable for kids three years and over is Mo Willem's Pigeon Party which plays at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. New to Broadway? Brush Up On Your Theatre Jargon You are visiting New York and you don't want to seem like an out-of-towner as you schmooze at the theatre bar after your first experience of Broadway. So here are your down-low, clandestine, cheat notes. Mix in a few of these words and you will be admitted to the conversation with the regular crowd. Dark: as in "Yesterday was a terrible day, the theatre was dark and the New York Times cryptic crossword only took me 5 minutes to complete. "When a theatre is dark, it means it is closed. Curtain Call: as in "I wish the curtain call had been longer, one of the actors was trying to mouth his phone number to me. "The curtain call is when the actors come back on stage at the end of the show and bow to the audience. Denouement: as in "What a disappointing denouement, it was all a dream!"The denouement is the last scene of a play when all the loose ends finally come together. You may also use wings, upstage, green room, off book, ham actor, Stanislavsky and flytower for added credibility with the theatre crowd. Don't worry too much about the meanings, just smile broadly and bat your eyelids if your authenticity is questioned. If you ever end up backstage before a show; don't say "Good Luck", it is considered very bad luck to do so. Use the phrase "Break a Leg" or "Good Show. "And, unless you want to be thrown from the theatre, never say "Macbeth" backstage, it is thought to bring disaster on stage, terrible reviews and early closing. If you must refer to Macbeth, you may substitute the term "the Scottish play" without being attacked by superstitious actors. The Most Dramatic Place to Eat Near Broadway. Even though life moves fast in New York, the people who live here respect their history. It would nice to have every visitor New York say thank you for that. The ‘21’ club in Manhattan is a great example of a place that people have strived to preserve and celebrate. Within walking distance of the Broadway theater district, 21, as it is affectionately known, will be 80 years old this year. Back at the start of prohibition in 1920, two young cousins, Jack Kriendler and Charlie Berns, tried their hand at the profitable but illegal speakeasy business. After a few years in different locations, the cousins settled on a former brownstone at 21 W 52nd Street. Ever since 21 exploded onto the New York City dining scene early on New Year’s Eve, 1929, it has been a part of what makes New York unique. If you only have a small budget for dining in New York, you must eat at 21; even if you have to go hungry the rest of the time. You’d be among an illustrious group. Every US President has dined at 21 (except George W Bush). After his inauguration, JFK ate at 21. The story goes that Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall had their first dinner-date there. Ernest Hemmingway got up to no good in the kitchen of 21 with gangster Legs Diamond’s girlfriend, and yes, he got caught. 21 is a perfect accompaniment to a Broadway theatre trip with its dramatic and long history.
