Puzzles for Christian Families

Piecing a puzzle together is a favorite family pastime. There are several religious puzzles available that will help invite the Holy Spirit into the home. Usually, puzzle solvers glance often at the big picture to know what the result should look like. If the big picture is one of religious importance, thoughts are directed toward this topic and toward God. It is easy to bring up conversation about the account or theme that the puzzle represents while putting it all together. When the puzzle is complete, many people like to frame their work and display it. With a Christian puzzle, this helps remind viewers of the values learned during its construction, and allows outsiders to ask about it and learn more about the gospel themselves. “Noah’s Ark”, “Days of Creation”, VeggieTales and Little Blessings are all puzzles based on Christian values that can be found for purchase.

School is not the only place where knowledge can be acquired

Games can be used to magnify the principles taught in the classroom. Comparative advantage and trade-offs, fundamental principles in a course of college economics, are practiced all during a game of Settlers of Catan. Just like discussed in a middle school history class, the colonization of the Americas by different civilizations is brought to life in the board game Age of Empires. Children who are learning to count many in elementary school will greatly benefit from practice with games like Monopoly and Alhambra. Operation and Somebody teach the science of anatomy on a fun and simple level for the younger ones to better visualize and understand the subject. Ticket to Ride relies heavily on U. S. Geography, and others like Pandemic involve world geography. Quiddler, among many others, challenge players on their ability with the English language and creating words. Even foreign languages are addressed, like in Bang! where all of the cards are written in English and Italian. The Game of Life helps gamers think ahead on their future and their goals and plans, which is what school is all about. Of course the best learning happens in the classroom, but these games can help gamers practice the principles taught in class.

Family Bonding Through Family Games

Repeatedly it has been found that one of the most effective ways for families to bond together is through playing family games. Playing games as a family allows the family to feel fun and joy together and clear out any negative feelings. With family games a lot of times members end up learning about one another things they did not otherwise know. Playing also helps recognize abilities and qualities that family members possess and are strong at. During game play occurrences often happen that lead to entertaining memories that family members will be able to recall even a long time afterwards. It is not infrequent that even family inside jokes are developed during game play that will unite the family even at later times. Hugs, high-fives, laughs, and compliments are also commonplace in family games. Games can be played over and over for more fun memories. They are also a cheaper alternative to going to the movies or dining out. Although the children or parents may not remember every game that was played as a family, the idea that the family always had fun together is what will stick with the children as they remember their childhood.

Ways to make Christian Gaming More Reverent

Christian games, like those based on the Bible, are great ways to bring up gospel conversation. Unfortunately, these games are occasionally played in a way that the religious point is lost. There are several ways to get more out of these religious games so that gospel learning is assured. For example, after each round, a Bible verse can be found that has to do with the idea that was presented. This can even turn into a game, as it can be made into a race to be the first to find the scripture. Before and after the game, hymns or praises about the ideas in the game can be sung to invite the Holy Spirit. Another idea is to have the children each recount a gospel principle or story that was addressed within the game. It is a good idea to start and end the game with a prayer as well to give thanks to God for each member of the family or the friends that are present.
