Getting Older Can Be Tough

January 31, 2012 | Author: | Posted in Everything Else

As we age some of the things that we have always taken for granted become a bit more challenging for us to do. Even some of our common, everyday routines seem to cause us a bit more stress and often make us feel tired.

When activities such as driving, going shopping or getting out of the house and visiting friends get to be too much of a challenge, you may want to consider moving to a residence that will accommodate your needs.

One option to consider is moving to a retirement home. Or you could consider moving to an assisted living facility or a nursing home.

Retirement homes are residences that you may want to consider moving to if you do not need any medical attention or help with dressing, bathing, or just getting around.

If you do need more attention but still are ambulatory you may want to consider moving to an assisted living facility. The staff at an assisted living facility is trained to help you with various daily activities such as bathing, dressing, etc. However, you will also have the option of participating in a lot of different activities that are available to residents of the facility.

If you need a lot of medical attention and find that it is virtually impossible to take care of yourself then you should consider moving into a nursing home. Nursing homes are residential facilities that provide assistance to people who are mentally or physically unable to live independently.

The residents of a nursing home are provided with meals, rooms, some medical treatment and nursing services.

Whatever options you choose make sure that you and/or your loved ones thoroughly check out the facility before you move there. Not all nursing homes and assisted living facilities are what they appear to be. You will want to make sure that you are getting what you pay for so it makes sense to do your homework before choosing a nursing home.

In addition, one of the sad realities that our aging baby boomer population now has to confront is that there is an increasing frequency of nursing home abuse. The United States. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recognizes that it is a national problem. HHS estimates that between one and two million Americans who are 65 or older have been exploited, injured, or otherwise mistreated by at least one person whom they depend on to take care of them.
